Kill The Giants

Jesus Is Lord!

As I was praying the other day the words “Kill The Giants” kept coming to my mind. As I meditated on that a little, the Lord brought some things to my mind that I want to share with you. I am not sure if I can finish it all in this Newsletter, but if not, I will continue it next month.

We all know the story of David and Goliath. The story is found in I Samuel 17. Jesse, David’s father, sent him to the battle lines to bring his brothers food and to inquire about their welfare. When he got there he found the whole Israeli army hiding and terrified by a Philistine from Gath named Goliath who was a giant.

To make the story shorter, please read I Samuel 17. I will make some points from the story that stood out to me. First of all, David made a statement that we should all learn!

In verse 26, he asked the question, “For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should taunt the armies of the living God?” That has been a favorite scripture for me when I am being attacked. Jesus overcame the devil and we have been given the victory! He has no authority to taunt the children of the Most High God, the Creator of everything there is.

Notice in verse 36, however, the reason David could declare such a statement. He had killed the lion and the bear while tending sheep. He knew His God and the power he had. He knew no giant could stand against the living God, and he put his trust in God to defeat the giant. We need to be like David. We need to practice defeating the lions and bears in our lives with the word of God and the name of Jesus on a daily basis. The attacks of satan must be defeated and the word of God must be used and believed in order to defeat the giants that come against us.

Now we see in verse 38 that Saul tried to give David his armor to fight the giant. David had not tested that kind of armor. He only knew the armor of the God of Israel that he had won the victories with. We can’t use the philosophies of the world to fight the spiritual forces of darkness led by satan, the god of this world. We may win a skirmish here and there that way; but we will never win the final battle or the big battles in our lives without using God’s word and His armor.

David knew how to use his sling and stones to defeat enemies that attacked the sheep he was watching over. So, he took his sling, picked up 5 smooth stones and went head-on into the battle. He used the weapons he had practiced with in the past.

There were a couple of things the Lord showed me about the 5 smooth stones. Some say he picked up 5 stones because Goliath had 4 brothers and he was going to defeat all 5 of them one day. That may be right. I wasn’t there, so I don’t know for sure. But God has shown me 5 giants we need to defeat. In fact, we need to kill them just like David did. These 5 giants are all related to one another just like the 5 giants that were brothers. They all kind of intertwine in our lives as we try to overcome and walk in victory.

Another thing I saw was the fact that David didn’t get rough, misshapen stones. They were carefully chosen as “smooth” stones. Smooth stones speak to me that they were stones that had been worn down with the rough edges off, possibly by time and the elements. David needed stones that were smooth because they would travel through the air on a true course and not fly off in another direction or fall short of the target. Rough, misshapen stones would not have traveled as accurately or as straight as smooth stones. Just like smooth stones, God’s weapons of warfare are tried and true. They never miss the mark when they are believed and used according to His ways. When we try to use another weapons, they will usually miss the mark or fail in some way.

Then there is the fact that David’s trust was totally in the Lord his God. He spoke the word of God over the situation and ran fearlessly into the battle, trusting God to give him the victory. (I Samuel 17:45-48).

Finally, notice that David hit the mark with only one stone. The giant was knocked out…BUT HE WASN’T DEAD YET!! We quite often knock the giants down for a time, but they keep getting back up and coming at us again. We need to kill them DEAD! David not only knocked him out, he ran and took the giant’s own sword and cut off his head with it…making sure he would never rise again to torment the armies of the living God. We need to kill the giants in our lives the same way. Many times in the scriptures I have seen times God’s enemies defeated by each other or by the very weapon they used to try to defeat His people.

That brings me to the 5 giants we all need to kill. As I said before these 5 giants are all related to each other. That is what makes them so hard to kill. If one isn’t after us the other one is and they hide behind each other sometimes. The 5 giants we need to kill are: 1. Fear. 2. Unforgiveness. 3. Anger. 4. Worry. 5. Discouragement.

Most of the time, the greatest enemy we have is fear. Unforgiveness, anger, worry and discouragement all tie very closely by fears that we have. There are two kinds of fear. There is the healthy God-given emotion of fear that warns us when we are in danger so we can avoid a catastrophe. We have all experienced that kind of fear when we are faced with sudden dangers. Without that kind of fear, we would be in a world of trouble.

The second kind of fear is called in the Bible “the spirit of fear”. This is an unhealthy kind of fear. For example we can fear sickness, death, and other things. This kind of fear can destroy us physically, emotionally and spiritually. This one is given to us by the satanic world. Whole nations are ruled by the spirit of fear through dictators resulting in terrible consequences if you dare to defy them. Terrorists rule by the spirit of fear.

Did you know that those who fear the most will quite often cause fear and terror in those they come in contact with? It is a way for them to cover up the fear they have going on inside them. The spirit of fear causes the anger, unforgiveness, worry and discouragement that many of us face. II Timothy 1:7 tells us: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” We have power over this kind of fear. We need to kill this giant with the power of God’s word and a sound mind.

The Bible also tells us to “fear” God. This kind of “fear” is actually translated “reverence”. To reverence God is to worship and respect God, the One who created us. He is a God of love to His children. We are not to fear Him in the sense that we need to be afraid of Him. He sent Jesus to die for our sins out of love for us. He wants to save us, not hurt us.

Well, I am not going to be able to finish this month, so I will continue it next month.

God bless you and keep you,
