Bobby's Story

Bobby (not his real name) was a short man. He was probably about 5’4” or so. He had a boyish face and was in his 20’s when Pastor Glenn went into Texas Death Row to visit him.

Bobby’s story is a sad one. He grew up in poverty with parents who physically, sexually and verbally abused him for as long as he could remember.

The only time he could remember in his childhood as having any peace or fun was when he was around 12 - 13 years old. He would go down to the lake not too far from his house and fish with a make-shift fishing pole. He would be gone sometimes for a couple of days, and no one would even care or try to find him.

He didn’t finish school and when he was old enough, he left home and started out on his own. As you can imagine, he got into trouble and ended up in prison.

Bobby had a lot of rage and hatred in him. While he was in prison, he came in contact with a homosexual man. He hated homosexuals; and one day he cornered the man and literally beat his head off his shoulders.

This act, of course, landed him on death row. When a person ends up on death row, no matter how tough they think they are, they have a lot of fear inside. There is very little hope for them. It is the end of the road for them.

When Pastor Glenn went to visit Bobby for the first time, Bobby was very remorseful, depressed and suicidal. He asked Pastor Glenn if it would be alright to just stop his appeals and let them execute him.

Pastor Glenn told him that he wasn’t God, and it wasn’t up to him to tell Bobby what to do. He then asked him if he wanted to give up his appeals because he knew Jesus and wanted to go home to be with Him, or if he was doing that to just end his life here on earth. Bobby couldn’t really answer that, other than to say he didn’t know much about Jesus.

Over the course of time, Pastor Glenn ministered to Bobby and we corresponded with him. He eventually gave his life to the Lord and his countenance changed, along with his attitude and love for Jesus.

When Pastor Glenn became ill and wasn’t able to continue ministering to Bobby any more, we had another minister named Tom Crouch who continued to minister to him.

In the end, Bobby did give up his appeals. Through ministry from Tom and Pastor Sandra’s correspondence, Bobby was totally transformed. He was literally glowing with the peace and presence of God. He couldn’t wait to go home and see Jesus and live eternally with him.

Our mission was accomplished!
